Three Weeks to Go And Some Games to Make Up

by @ 9:28 am. Filed under 2007 Season

With three weeks to go, the Dodgers still have some winning to do.  Since August 15, they’re 14-8 record is tied with the Giants as the best in the entire National League.  Unfortunately, they’ve outplayed the Padres by just one game and the Diamondbacks by two so the ground they’ve made up has been minimal.  Still with three weeks to go, if the Dodgers can keep up this kind of pace, it should earn them a spot in the playoffs.

Probably the most frustrating part of this season has been the one-two punch of Rafael Furcal and Juan Pierre at the top of the lineup every day.  Furcal has a .334 OBP and Pierre’s sits at .325 so they’re nobody really setting the table for guys like Jeff Kent and Russ Martin.  Oddly, the offense hasn’t been horrible and the Dodgers sit right in the middle with an eighth place in runs scored.   Oh, and Juan Pierre leads the National League in outs.

Of course it helps when you have the second best ERA in baseball.  Brad Penny should get some Cy Young votes and Derek Lowe and the emerging Chad Billingsley give the Dodgers some depth.  And of course there’s the pen, which is top notch.  Takashi Saito has been as good of closer as anyone in the league and one of my favorites, Jon Broxton, has really come into his own.  Broxton has been the workhorse and with 73 games, only Jon Rauch in Washington has made more appearances.  This is a guy who would be closing for several major league clubs.

Of course they have a huge week.  They start a three game series on Tuesday against the Padres and then three more against the Diamondbacks.  You could be looking at the Dodgers season wrapped up in a week.  All six games are at home which will be nice as well.  It’ll be their last meeting with the Padres and they still have another series against the Diamondbacks.
