Dodgers Drop Series, Still Unable to Clinch

by @ 2:21 pm. Filed under 2009 Dodgers

The Dodgers took a rough 1-11 loss to lose the series on Monday, and with the Rockies off, they will have to wait at least one more day before they clinch the NL West.

Hiroki Kuroda was rocked for seven runs, though only three were earned. Mark Loretta got a throwing error leading off the second inning, which would turn into a five-run Pirates rally. Kuroda was then lifted after four, but not before giving up a solo shot to Andy LaRoche, who had 6 RBIs for the Pirates today. Mota and James McDonald then each gave up two runs in late innings, including another two-run shot by LaRoche off of McDonald in the eighth.

Zach Duke held the Dodgers to four hits, with the only run being a sacrifice fly by Chin-lung Hu in the ninth to score Orlando Hudson and to avoid the shutout.

Dodgers Lose to Pirates, Still Waiting to Clinch

by @ 8:19 pm. Filed under 2009 Dodgers

The Dodgers pulled off a win on Saturday but a late-inning error on Sunday allowed the Pirates to win and pull ahead in the series, putting the Dodgers’ hopes for a clinch in the West on hold for at least one more day.

The Dodgers rallied for five late-inning runs on Saturday for the win. Maholm held the Dodgers to just three runs through seven, but they came out with a four-run eighth to take the lead. They got help by getting four walks that inning, with Andre Ethier and Orlando Hudson each drawing bases-loaded walks to score runs. Jim Thome then put the Dodgers in the lead with a pinch-hit two-run single. Ronnie Belliard also knocked a two-out solo homerun in the ninth. Manny, Belliard, and Loretta each had multi-hit games.

Randy Wolf remains unbeaten still, yet he didn’t earn the win in this one. He gave up just two runs on four hits before being lifted with one out in the seventh. Sherrill came on in relief of Kuo and allowed two runners to score, but still picked up the win.

Clayton Kershaw was only able to go four innings, but he held the Pirates to two runs and left with the game tied. Weaver, Belisario, and Sherrill then held the Pirates scoreless, and Broxton came on in the ninth with a three-run lead. Broxton allowed two leadoff singles, with one eventually scoring on an error by Rafael Furcal. The bases were then loaded and what would have only been a single turned into a bases-clearing, walk-off hit, due to Ethier’s fielding error in right. Three of Broxton’s four runs were earned and he took the loss.

The Dodgers only managed two runs through the first eight innings, but they took the lead with three runs in the ninth before taking the loss. Furcal had a two-RBI hit in the ninth, and Loney and Belliard each went 2 for 4, before Belliard pulled his groin muscle while rounding the bases in the ninth.

The Dodgers have yet another day to clinch the NL West, with Hiroki Kuroda taking on Zach Duke.

Dodgers Still A Game from Clinching

by @ 3:27 am. Filed under 2009 Dodgers

The Dodgers’ Magic Number still stands at 1 as they took a 1-3 loss to the Pirates on Friday.

Jon Garland struck out six through six innings, giving up three runs but no earned. Blake DeWitt committing a throwing error in the first that led to the first unearned run, and a fielding error by James Loney in the third led to two more unearned runs. Its unfortunate that Garland got the loss, his first as a Dodger, despite his strong performance.

Not only was Garland tagged for the loss due to errors by the defense, but the offense was also not able to back him up. The only run the Dodgers were able to score off Karstens was an RBI-double in the second inning by Orlando Hudson to plate DeWitt.

The Dodgers hope to clinch their playoff spot on Saturday, with Randy Wolf taking on Paul Maholm. Wolf is still unbeaten in his last eight starts, while Maholm is 8-9 and 0-3 lifetime with a 6.00 ERA against the Dodgers.

By the time Vincente Padilla took the mound in the first, he already had a nice four-run cushion. He would need it, though, after giving up three runs in the second and another in the fourth before being taken out after five. He totaled six strikeouts and didn’t earn a decision. Ronnie Belisario was rocked in the sixth, giving up two runs on three hits and was unable to make it out of the inning. Troncoso came on with two runners on, but escaped the inning and ended up picking up the win after tossing the seventh. Broxton also tossed a perfect ninth for his 36th save.

The Dodgers came out strong, rallying for four runs in the first, keyed by a three-run shot by Matt Kemp. Blake DeWitt drove in two and Rafael Furcal drove a solo go-ahead homerun in the eighth, one of his four hits on the night.

The Dodgers can clinch today with either a win or a Rockies’ loss. Jon Garland will take on Jeff Karstens tonight. Garland is still a perfect 3-0 since coming over from the Dbacks, while Karstens is a fill-in man for the rotation, so the Dodgers should be able to produce some offense off of him.

Zimmerman's Three-Run Shot Powers Nats Past Dodgers

by @ 6:43 am. Filed under 2009 Dodgers

Chad Billingsley sailed through five-plus innings, but he gave up a tying homerun in the sixth as the Nationals went on to beat the Dodgers, 5-4.

Billingsley had a perfect game ’til the fourth, and a no-hitter until the sixth innings with two outs. He then yielded two walks before Ryan Zimmerman tied the game with a three-run homerun. Billingsley finished the inning, after nine strikeouts on the night, and didn’t factor into the decision. George Sherrill was tagged for a run in the eighth and after the Dodgers tied it in the ninth, but the Nationals got the walk-off win with a one-out sacrifice fly in the ninth.

The Dodgers had spread out three innings by the time the Nats tied it in the sixth, and after the Nationals went ahead 4-3 in the eighth, they had a chance for a comeback in the ninth. The Dodgers managed to load the bases with no outs in the ninth, but only managed to squeeze home one run to tie it rather than take the lead. Furcal, Belliard, and Loney each had two hits on the night.

The Dodgers’ magic number now sits at two, as Vincente Padilla takes on J.D. Martin in Thursday’s rubber match.

Dodgers Blast Nationals, Cut Magic Number to 3

by @ 8:52 pm. Filed under 2009 Dodgers

The Dodgers were eager to get their bats going after Monday’s off day, plating 14 runs, including a seven-run fourth and a six-run seventh inning.

the twilight saga: eclipse characters

Hiroki Kuroda had plenty of run support, but he didn’t need much of it, holding the Nationals to two runs (none earned) on four hits while striking out six. A Rafael Furcal fielding error in the third allowed two runs to score, otherwise Kuroda completely shut down the Nats.

Every starting Dodger got on base in this one, with four having multi-hit games. The biggest offense highlight was Furcal, who made up for his error by going 4 for 5 with four RBIs and two runs. Loney and Blake each also had multi-hit games, and each with two runs scored and two RBIs.

The Dodgers are within a couple games of officially clinching a post-season guarantee. Chad Billingsley will take on Ross Detwiler on Thursday. Billingsley was rocked in his last outing, which was a relief appearance against the Giants last Friday, though he is 3-0 lifetime against the Nationals. Detwiler is a winless 0-6 with a 5.80 ERA, and has spent some time in Triple-A during his struggles this season.

Wolf Helps Dodgers Get Series Win

by @ 5:45 am. Filed under 2009 Dodgers

The Dodgers remained five games up as they beat the Giants in Sunday’s rubber match, 6-2.

Wolf picked up another win, going six-plus innings, with his only mistakes being a solo homerun in each the first and sixth innings. Kuo, Sherrill, and Broxton then each tossed a perfect inning apiece, with Sherrill and Broxton notching two K’s each.

Andre Ethier got the offense going with a two-run homerun in the third to put the Dodgers in the lead. Ronnie Belliard made it 4-1 with a two-RBI single in the fourth.

The Dodgers have Monday off before heading to Washington to take on what should be an easy series with the Nationals. Hiroki Kuroda will make the start on Tuesday, facing Livan Hernandez. Kuroda is 2-0 in his last two starts and is facing the Nats for the first time in his career, while Hernandez took a loss in his last outing against the Phillies, though yielded just two earned runs.

The Dodgers won in 13 innings of Tuesday, 5-4, for their 12th walk-off win of the season to move five games up in the West.

Randy Wolf posted a quality start, and still remains unbeaten with the no decision in his last six games. Broxton tossed a perfect ninth with three K’s, and James McDonald game out for three shutout innings, with three strikeouts. Belisario picked up the win after giving up an unearned run in the top of the 13th before the Dodgers came back for two.

Zach Duke dominated the Dodgers in his 7 1/3 innings, holding the Dodgers to two runs on four hits while fanning seven. Hiroki Kuroda posted eight solid innings on Friday, holding the Giants to two runs on three hits while striking out five. He was backed by three RBIs each by Casey Blake and James Loney, and was given a giant cushion when the offense put up five runs in the seventh inning. Ethier, Kemp, Loney, Blake, and Martin all had multi- hit games.

The offense continued to stay hot on Saturday, posting nine runs, scoring in all but three innings. Russell Martin hit a three-run shot in a four-run fourth inning, and James Loney also drove a two-run shot in the ninth. Vincente Padilla allowed one run (unearned) in a three-hit, six-inning win.

The Dodgers hopes at a sweep were halted by former Dodger Brad Penny, holding the Dodgers to two runs through seven innings. Russell Martin went yard for the second day in a row for the Dodgers’ only two runs, in the seventh inning. The Dodgers were held to just five hits, compared to the Giants’ 15. Chad Billingsley took the loss in this one, giving up three runs on eight hits before leaving after four innings. Dodgers Fall to Dbacks in the Ninth

by @ 7:04 am. Filed under 2009 Dodgers

The Dodgers came close to getting the series sweep, but fell short as Ramon Troncoso walked home the Dbacks’ winning run in the ninth for the Dodgers 3-4 loss.

Jon Garland made a solid start, going six innings to three runs on six hits. His only real trouble was in the second when he gave up two leadoff back-to-back homeruns. Belisario and Sherrill tossed the seventh and eighth innings, and Troncoso came on for the ninth with a tie game, hoping to extend the game and save Broxton for the extra innings. Troncoso put a runner on second by his own throwing error, who soon moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Troncoso then issued two intentional walks to load the bases with one out. The plan failed, though, as Troncoso worked Mark Reynolds to a full-count but he drew the walk to allow Gerado Parra to score the winning run.

Manny Ramirez drove in a run in the first before driving a solo shot in the fourth. James Loney made it back-to-back shots with his 11th of the year to give the Dodgers a 3-2 lead. The Dodgers were otherwise dominated by the Dbacks staff, with Dan Haren fanning nine and Juan Gutierrez keepin the Dodgers off base for the last 1 2/3 innings.

Since the Rockies are still on their hot win streak, the Dodgers NL West lead has been cut to 2 1/2 games. Billy Buckner held the Dodgers to one run through seven, but they managed to score four in the eighth off the Dbacks’ bullpen for the win to keep themselves 3 1/2 games up in the division.

Chad Billingsley gave up four runs on eight hits through six, and the Dodgers eighth inning rally spared him from the loss. It was James McDonald who picked up the win, tossing a perfect seveneth, striking out all three batters. Kuo tossed an inning before Broxton picked up his 34th save.

Buckner held the Dodgers to one run through seven, coming in the first off an RBI-double by Ethier, before the Dodgers grounded into five total double plays off Buckner. The Dodgers then rallied in the eighth, with all runs scoring with two outs. Juan Pierre grounded into a fielder’s choice (almost a double play) that got Martin out for the second out and Pierre on first. Dodgers Beat Dbacks, 4-3

by @ 6:15 am. Filed under 2009 Dodgers

The Dodgers came back to score a run in the seventh to beat the Diamondbacks 4-3 on Tuesday to even up the series.

Vicente Padilla gave the Dodgers a decent start, going 5 1/3 innings and giving up just one run while striking out five. Scott Elbert, just called up from Triple-A, relieved Padilla in the sixth, but was only able to record one out while being tagged for two runs. Belisario escaped the inning and tossed the seventh to pick up his third win. Troncoso tossed the eighth and Broxton picked up his 30th save, complete with two strikeouts.

The Dodgers answered the Dbacks’ run in the first with a solo homerun by Matt Kemp, his fourth straight in four days. The Dodgers scored a run each in the second and third, and were tied at 3’s when the Dbacks scored two in the sixth. Jonathan Broxton pitched a perfect ninth, but James McDonald took the loss in the 10th when he gave up a leadoff solo homerun and allowed a second run to score.

Doug Davis wasn’t as solid as Wolf, allowing three runs on five hits while walking two. Ronnie Belliard, in his first at bat as a Dodger, drove a solo homerun in the second inning to put the Dodgers on board. Manny Ramirez and Matt Kemp then hit back-to-back solo shots in the sixth to give the Dodgers a 3-2 lead, with the homer by Kemp being his third in as many days. The Dodgers send Vicente Padilla to the mound Tuesday to face Yusimero Petit. Padilla is making his second start for the Dodgers.

The club will also have two new additions to the team tonight, as they traded for Jim Thome and Jon Garland. Thome is coming over from the White Sox, and the Dodgers gave up Minor League infielder Justin Fuller in the trade. Thome has been strictly a DH for the Sox in the past two years, and he will most likely just be used as a lefty power hitter off the bench for the Dodgers, so Loney will not have to worry about giving up any time at first. The Dodgers have yet to name a player to trade for Garland to the Diamondbacks. With the Dbacks this year, Garland is 8-11 with a 4.29 ERA. Garland will give the Dodgers a permanent fifth starter, replacing Hager. He was expected to pitch Thursday with the Diamondbacks against the Dodgers, but now it appears it will be the other way around.
