Orel Hershiser Throws Two Hit Shutout For Twelfth Win

Orel Hershiser had another nice start and he improved to 12-3 as the Dodgers won the rubber game in the series with the Astros.  He gave up just a pair of hits and a walk with six strikeouts in the complete game shutout.

Mike Marshall drove in both Dodgers runs.  He was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth inning and then he singled home Kirk Gibson in the eighth inning.

Dodgers Held to Three Hits, Four Game Winning Streak Ends

The Dodgers four game winning streak came to an end in a game that saw the Dodgers pick up just three hits.  Mike Marshall hit a solo homer, his ninth long ball of the season, and John Shelby went one for three with a walk and an RBI.

Don Sutton got the start but not the decision.  He gave up two runs on five hits with two strikeouts in five innings.  Brian Holton took the loss and he fell to 3-2 and he gave up a run in two innings of work.

Shawn Hillegas Throws Six Shutout Innings In Dodgers Fourth Straight Win

The Dodgers won their fourth straight game with some solid pitching.  Shawn Hillegas got the start and he improved to 2-0 with six shutout innings while three relievers combined to throw three innings of three hit ball.  Alejandro Pena gave up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts in two innings and he picked up his sixth save of the season.

Mike Scioscia put the Dodgers on the board in the fourth inning with a solo homer and he finished two for four.  Steve Sax went two for four with a walk, a stolen base and a run.

John Shelby Drives In Three, Dodgers Sweep Reds

Dodgers 9, Reds 6  (42-29)

The Dodgers finished up their sweep over the Reds and won for the eighth time in the last nine games behind some nice hitting.  In all, the Dodgers picked up fifteen hits and drew seven walks in a game that was a lot closer then it should have been.  John Shelby went three for five and he drove in three while Steve Sax drove in three runs with a bases clearing pinch hit double.  Kirk Gibson pitched in and he went three for five with a double and two runs.

Tim Belcher improved to 5-4 despite being the most ineffective of the four Dodgers pitchers used.  He gave up three runs on two hits and a walk with five strikeouts in five innings.  Brian Holton struck out one in a perfect ninth and he picked up his first save of the season.

Dodgers Pen Shuts Down Reds In Another Dodger Win

The Dodgers continued their run with their second straight win against the Reds and their seventh win in eight games.  Mike Marshall had a big day at the plate and he went three for five with two RBIs while Hamilton went two for four with a double, two runs and an RBI.

Fernando Valenzuela was shelled and he gave up four runs and got pulled with two outs in the first inning.  Brian Holton got the final batter out in the first and he picked up the win because the Dodgers answered with five in the second inning.  Tim Crews and Alejandro Pena did the bulk of the heavy lifting though and they threw four and 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief respectively.

Orel Hershiser Wins Eleventh, Dodgers Continue to Roll

The venue was different but the result was the same as the Dodgers won for the sixth time in seven games.  Drew Stubbs went two for four with a solo homer and two runs in the win.  Jeff Anderson tripled and he drove in a pair.

Orel Hershiser improved to 11-3.  He gave up three runs on eight hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.  Tim Belcher struck out the side in a perfect ninth inning and he picked up his second save of the season.

Don Sutton Has Rough Start, Dodgers Five Game Winning Streak Ends

The Dodgers five game winning streak came to an end as the offense was held in check.  Dave Anderson’s double was one of the Dodgers four hits and he drove in Jeff Hamilton for the lone Dodger run.

Don Sutton had a rough start and he fell to 3-5.  He gave up four runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.  Three relievers combined to throw 5 1/3 innings of shutout relief but it wasn’t enough.

Tim Leary Strikes Out Seven In Dodgers Fifth Straight Win

Tim Leary was on the better end of a pitcher’s duel as the Dodgers picked up their fifth straight win.  He improved to 6-5 and he gave up one run on four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in the complete game win.

Jeff Hamilton went three for four and he scored one of the Dodgers’ two runs.  Kirk Gibson finished the game two for four.

Kirk Gibson Helps Hit Dodgers to Fourth Straight Win

The Dodgers rattled off their fourth straight win and it was Kirk Gibson and John Shelby who got it done at the plate.  Gibson went two for two with a walk, two runs and an RBI.  Shelby went three for four with two RBIs and a run.

Shawn Hillegas picked up the win and he improved to 1-0 and he gave up three runs on ten hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings.  Alejandro Pena got the final batter out and he picked up his fifth save of the season.

Dodgers Return Favor, Sweep Doubleheader Over Padres

The opening game of the Dodgers second doubleheader in three days went a lot better then the previous doubleheader.  The end result was a blowout win that saw Orel Hershiser pick up his tenth win of the season.  He gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in the complete game win.

Rick Dempsey was one of the hitting stars in the win.  He went two for three with a homerun and three RBIs.  Kirk Gibson went one for one with two walks, a solo homer and two runs.  The long ball was his 14th of the season.

Dodgers 5, Padres 4  (37-28)

It took eleven innings, but the Dodgers walked away with a sweep of their doubleheader over the Padres.  Seven of the nine runs scored by both teams came in the first three innings and then after that, things settled into a solid pitcher’s duel.  Fernando Valenzuela gave up three runs in 7 1/3 innings while Tim Crews picked up the win with two innings of shutout relief.

Mike Marshall went three for four with two doubles, a run and an RBI.  Hamilton hit a solo shot and the game winner came on an RBI single by Mr. clutch, Kirk Gibson, in the bottom of the eleventh inning.

Tim Belcher Throws 6+ Shutout Innings In Dodgers Win

Tim Belcher and the Dodgers bullpen came to the rescue as the Dodger snapped their three game winning streak.  Belcher improved to 4-4 and he gave up just three hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.  Jay Howell threw two shutout innings to close out the game and he picked up his eight save of the season.

Kirk Gibson belted homerun number 13 on the season.  John Shelby went two for four with a run while Hamilton went yard with a two run homer.

The Dodgers got a day off and it did them some good as they took care of the Braves in their series opener.  John Shelby belted a two run homer while Mike Marshall went three for five with a run and an RBI.

Fernando Valenzuela improved to 5-5 with a nice start.  He gave up two runs on four hits and three walks with one strikeout in seven innings.  Jay Howell threw two shutout innings to close out the game and he picked up his seventh save of the season.

Padres Sweep Dodgers In Doubleheader

Tim Leary had a tough time and he took the loss as the Dodgers dropped their first of two against the Padres.  Leary fell to 5-5 and he gave up five runs on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts in five innings.  Tim Crews was also knocked around and he gave up two runs in his three innings of relief.

Steve Sax went two for four with a walk and a run.  Sax was also the starting point for two double plays.  Hamilton went two for four and he drove in a run.

Padres 4, Dodgers 3  (34-28)

A solid start by Don Sutton went to waste as the Dodgers were swept in their doubleheader with the Padres.  Sutton gave up just two runs (one earned) on four hits and six walks with a strikeout in five innings.  Holton was then bounced for two runs in his two innings of relief and he fell to 2-1 on the season.

John Shelby and Rick Dempsey both went yard with solo shots in the loss.  Shelby finished the game one for two with two walks and two runs.

Braves Blast Ken Howell In Dodgers Loss

Ken Howell was knocked around by the Braves as the Dodgers failed to finish up a sweep.  He gave up nine runs on fifteen hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in six innings.  The loss dropped him to 0-1 on the season.

Mike Marshall homered and drove in two runs.  Steve Sax singled, drew a walk and scored a run.

John Shelby continued his hot hitting as he had a big day in the Dodgers second straight win. He was a perfect three for three with a walk and two runs.  Kirk Gibson hit homerun number twelve and Hamilton had two singles, a run and an RBI.

Orel Hershiser gave up three runs on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts in seven innings.  The win improved his record to 9-3.

Tim Belcher Is Roughed Up, Padres Finish Sweep Over Dodgers

The Dodgers suffered a sweep at the hands of the Padres and the only thing different about this one is the Dodgers lost by more then one run.  John Shelby was the hitting star in the loss.  He went three for four with two doubles, a run and an RBI.

Tim Belcher fell to 3-4 with a rough start.  He gave up four runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in just four innings.

Dodgers Offense Held In Check Again In Second Straight Loss to Padres

The Dodgers dropped their second straight one run game and in this one, they managed just five hits and they couldn’t capitalize on three Padre errors.  Mickey Hatcher went two for four with a run and Kirk Gibson singled twice.

A nice start by Don Sutton went to waste and he fell to 3-4.  He gave up two runs on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts in six innings.

Dodgers Held to Five Hits In Loss to Padres

The Dodgers managed just five hits and while they made it a close game in their opener with the Padres, it wasn’t enough.  No Dodger reached base more then once and Jeff Hamilton singled, scored and drove in a run.

Jay Howell gave up two runs in the bottom of the ninth and he took the loss.  It’s too bad because a solid start by Tim Leary went to waste.  He gave up two runs on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

Orel Hershiser outdueled Nolan Ryan as he picked up his eighth win of the season.  He gave up two runs on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts in eight innings.  Jay Howell gave up just one hit in the final inning and he picked up his sixth save of the season.

Mike Scioscia went three for four with an RBI.  John Shelby went one for three with a walk, two runs and an RBI.

Fernando Valenzuela Throws Six Hitter In Dodgers Win

Mike Marshall had a big day at the plate as the Dodgers snapped their two game miniskid.  He went four for five with a solo homer and three runs.  Kirk Gibson hit his eleventh homer of the season and he finished with two runs and two RBIs.

Fernando Valenzuela had an exceptional start and he improved to 4-5.  He gave up one run on six hits and three walks in the complete game win.

Tim Belcher Is Rougher Up By Astros

The Dodgers lost their second straight and it was their third loss in four games as Tim Belcher was knocked around early and often. He yielded five runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts and he didn’t even make it out of the third inning. 

Steve Sax was two for four and he scored one of the Dodgers runs.  Kirk Gibson was 0 for 4 but he drove in a run.

Pen Gives Up Nine Runs In Blowout Loss to Astros

A solid start by Don Sutton went to waste as the Dodgers dropped their series opener with the Astros.  When Sutton left after six innings, the Dodgers had a 2-1 lead and then the pen yielded nine runs in the final three frames.  Tim Crews was hit the hardest and he gave up five runs in just one inning of work.

Kirk Gibson was the hitting star in the loss.  He went two for four with a double, a homerun and two RBIs.  The long ball was hit tenth of the season.

Dodgers Hold On To Beat Reds, Win Series

The Dodgers held on to beat the Reds in the rubber game of their series and in the process, picked up their 30th win of the season.  The Dodgers jumped out to a 5-1 lead but the Reds whittled it down to just a single run deficit before Jay Howell came in and slammed the door.  He picked up his fifth save while Tim Leary improved to 5-4.  Leary gave up four runs (three earned) on ten hits and a walk with five strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.

Kirk Gibson doubled, singled, drove in a run and scored.  Jeff Hamilton tripled, singled drove in one and scored.

Orel Hershiser Has Rough Start In Loss to Reds

Orel Hershiser didn’t have his best stuff and he fell to 7-3 as the Reds evened up their series with the Dodgers. Hershiser went the distance but he gave up five runs on eleven hits and five walks with six strikeouts.

Steve Sax singled and drove in a pair of runs.  Mike Scioscia was the only Dodger with two hits in the loss.

Steve Sax and Mickey Hatcher Have Five Hits Each In Blowout Win Over Reds

The Dodgers returned home to LA and put on some fireworks as they blew out the Reds in their series opener.  Steve Sax was five for six with two runs while Mickey Hatcher went five for six with two runs and two RBIs.  Pedro Guerrero went three for four with three RBIs and two runs.

Fernando Valenzuela had a tough start but he avoided the loss because of all the offense.  He gave up four runs in 2 1/3 innings while Tim Crews threw 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief to improve to 1-0.

Dodgers Avoid Sweep, Edge Mets 4-3

The Dodgers salvaged a win in the final game of their series with the Mets to avoid a sweep.  Jeff Hamilton drove in two runs with a pinch hit single in the seventh inning  which proved to be the difference in the game.  Pedro Guerrero was the only Dodger with a pair of hits.

Tim Belcher threw two shutout innings but then he was ejected in the third.  Brian Holton picked up his first win of the season and he gave up one run in four innings of solid relief.

Dodgers Lose to Mets In Eleven Innings

Mets 5, Dodgers 4  (27-20)

The Dodgers lost a tough one in a game that started out as a pitcher’s duel but end up having it’s share of runs.  Don Sutton gave up two runs in the fifth and that looked like it might be enough as Dwight Gooden shut down the Dodgers.  Then in the ninth, Kirk Gibson belted a clutch solo homer to tie the game and send it into extra frames.  The Dodgers then looked like they’d win it when they scored two runs in the tenth but the Mets answered with two of their own off of Jay Howell.  Then in the bottom of the eleventh, Alejandro Pena gave up a walk off solo homer to Scott Elster for the Dodgers second straight loss.

Kirk Gibson finished the game two for five and he was the only Dodger with two hits.  Steve Sax singled and he drove in one of the Dodgers’ runs.

Mets Top Dodgers In Series Opener

Tim Leary was roughed up and he fell to 4-4 as the Dodgers dropped their series opener to the Mets.  Leary gave up three runs on six hits and five walks with six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.  Tim Crews threw two shutout innings to close out the game but the Dodgers weren’t able to mount a come back against Mets starter Ron Darling.

John Shelby was the hitting star and he drove in both Dodgers run.  He went two for four with a homerun and two RBIs.

The Dodgers won their rubber game with the Expos despite racking up just four hits in the contest.  Orel Hershiser didn’t require much help though as he improved to 7-2.  He gave up one run on nine hits with seven strikeouts in the complete game. 

Both of the Dodgers runs came around on solo homers.  Kirk Gibson hit his eighth homer in the first inning and John Shelby ripped his first homer of the season in the fourth inning.

Dodgers Lose Pitchers Duel, Four Game Winning Streak Ends

The Dodgers four game winning streak came to an end despite a nice start by Fernando Valenzuela.  He gave up just two runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts in nine innings. Jay Howell ran into trouble in the tenth and he took the loss.  He gave up lead off single thenhe slipped on a bunt attempt and threw late to first base.  A single later in the inning drove home the winning run and that dropped Howell’s record to 2-1.

Kirk Gibson doubled twice to bring his season total up to twelve.  Steve Sax went two for four with a walk, a double and a run.
