Dodgers Fall in 10 Innings

by @ 4:40 am. Filed under 2009 Dodgers

Randy Wolf had another strong outing but the bullpen couldn’t hold as the Diamondbacks scored two in the 10th to beat the Dodgers, 5-3.

Wolf struck out seven in six innings, giving up just two runs and earning the no decision, his 14th of the year. Sherrill gave up a solo homerun in the eighth to tie it and send the game to extras. Jonathan Broxton pitched a perfect ninth, but James McDonald took the loss in the 10th when he gave up a leadoff solo homerun and allowed a second run to score.

Doug Davis wasn’t as solid as Wolf, allowing three runs on five hits while walking two. Ronnie Belliard, in his first at bat as a Dodger, drove a solo homerun in the second inning to put the Dodgers on board. Manny Ramirez and Matt Kemp then hit back-to-back solo shots in the sixth to give the Dodgers a 3-2 lead, with the homer by Kemp being his third in as many days. That was the end of the offense, though, as the Dodgers were kept off base after the seventh inning.

The Dodgers send Vicente Padilla to the mound Tuesday to face Yusimero Petit. Padilla is making his second start for the Dodgers.

The club will also have two new additions to the team tonight, as they traded for Jim Thome and Jon Garland. Thome is coming over from the White Sox, and the Dodgers gave up Minor League infielder Justin Fuller in the trade. Thome has been strictly a DH for the Sox in the past two years, and he will most likely just be used as a lefty power hitter off the bench for the Dodgers, so Loney will not have to worry about giving up any time at first. The Dodgers have yet to name a player to trade for Garland to the Diamondbacks. With the Dbacks this year, Garland is 8-11 with a 4.29 ERA. Garland will give the Dodgers a permanent fifth starter, replacing Hager. He was expected to pitch Thursday with the Diamondbacks against the Dodgers, but now it appears it will be the other way around.
