Man, are things getting interesting. The Dodgers won three straight against the Diamondbacks and just like that, we’re back in first place. Problem is, so are the Padres and Rockies. While we’re not there quite yet, we could definitely have a situation like the 1967 AL pennant race, where the NL West is anybody’s to take even heading into the final weeks of the season.
Monday’s game was unusual. Derek Lowe wasn’t exactly sharp but he picked up the win. And Nomar Garciapara was hit by three pitches. Andre Ethier got it done with the bat though. He went four for five with two RBIs and a run. J.D. Drew and Jose Cruz, Jr. both scored twice in the 10-4 win.
Tuesday was more the same. The Dodgers ran up the score and won 11-3 with Andre Ethier once again have a spectacular game. He only had one hit but it was a triple and he finished the game with four RBIs. J.D. Drew went two for two with an RBI and three runs. Aaron Sele picked up the win and he gave up two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts though six innings.
Last night’s game was the closest. The Dodgers jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but then proceeded to give it up. In the ninth, the Diamondbacks scored two runs to make it 5-4, but Takashi Saito stranded men at first and second to end the game. Andre Ethier hit a solo homerun, his sixth homerun of the year.
Next up is a four game series against the Giants, who are a game and a half back of the mess in the NL West. At this point, the Dodgers just have to win, regardless of who the team is. And we definitely don’t want a fourth team being so close, not that the Giants aren’t already.
